This request for supplemental funding reflects a continuing discussion with the staff of the National Endowment for the Arts about the feasibility of adding an arts strand into the new cohort of the Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY). The original 1987 LSAY cohorts of 7th and 10th grade public school students focused heavily on the development of interest in science, engineering, and mathematics and in the acquisition of skills in those areas. The original LSAY cohort questionnaires included a few items about the arts and humanities, but primarily in regard to courses taken during the middle school and high school years. There were a few questions during the secondary school years about extracurricular activities such as playing in a band or orchestra or taking after-school or summer lessons in those areas (primarily as a contrast to similar questions about tutoring and out-of-school instruction and camps in science and mathematics).
