ICPSR plans to ingest, curate, disseminate, and preserve data and metadata from the study conducted in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta. ICPSR will curate the data to ensure compliance with the FAIR data principles — findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability. The curation process includes a thorough review of the data for disclosure risk during which curators assess whether any items or patterns in the data could allow re-identification of individuals. If such issues are found, data curators address the confidentiality concerns in consultation with the principal investigator to protect research subjects while at the same time maximizing the analytic potential of the data. In addition, data curators enhance existing documentation and perform a variety of data cleaning tasks, including checking for undocumented codes and standardizing missing data. More specifically, the curation process may include the following steps, designed to optimize the datas potential for reuse: ?Review data for level of sensitivity and re-identification risk ?Separate any personally identifiable information (PII), creating a secure encrypted crosswalk ?Convert hardcopy documentation to electronic form ?Convert software-specific documentation to PDF/A ?Generate multiple data formats for dissemination and preservation ?Create documentation compliant with the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) specification ?Create a descriptive metadata record ?Assign a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which recognizes the contribution of the researcher and ensures that the data are discoverable ?When necessary, recode variables to address confidentiality concerns ?Check for undocumented/out of range codes ?Add question text to variables ?Create variable labels ?Create value labels ?Identify and address foreign language characters ?Adjust format widths ?Optimize file size ?Standardize missing values ?Check for consistency and skip patterns ?Create online analysis version with question text ?Add variables to the Social Science Variables Database ?Gather citations to related publications for the Bibliography of Data-Related Literature Products of the curation process at ICPSR include a full suite of data files in all of the popular statistical analysis packages as well as comprehensive documentation offering study-level information and detailed variable/question information (e.g., variable name and label, value labels, question text, universe statements, and missing data definitions) with displays of univariate frequency distributions. All documentation is provided in PDF format and encoded in the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) standard, an international structured metadata standard for describing social and behavioral science data. The curated data package will be made available to qualified data users at no cost to the users. ICPSRs processes and procedures are aligned with the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS), an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard (ISO 14721:2012) that provides the functional framework for sustaining digital objects in managed repositories.
