Leveraging the skills of an exceptional team of researchers across multiple institutions, this project will produce robust social-scientific knowledge and data on the role of social cohesion in weathering crises. We study these issues in the context of the Indo-Pacific, focusing on 6 countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Republic of China (Taiwan), and Vietnam. These data and conceptual insights can be used to better understand crisis resilience across the greater Indo-Pacific region. To achieve this goal, the project develops a novel conceptual framework for studying social cohesion, which departs crucially from existing research in conceiving of social cohesion as a dynamically derived quantity that is context dependent.
