Media coverage of the war on drugs has focused too much on the drama of the drug trade and too little on the solutions of reducing demand through education and treatment. Most law enforcement officials as well as public and private experts agree that the drug epidemic can only be beat by reducing the demand for the product. Fighting the cartels and trying to stamp out supply is a vain effort. However, the lion’s share of media coverage on the issue is devoted to the high drama of the international drug trade. Practical matters such as education and interdiction programs get scant coverage.
