The writer responds to Irving Louis Horowitz's article “Cultural Contradictions of Contemporary Sociology” in this issue. He contends that sociology is so heterogeneous in its topics, methods, and approaches that any sweeping generalization is at best misleading. Horowitz's wholesale rejection of contemporary sociology as an ideology-based enterprise, he argues, is itself an ideology-based claim.
