Contributions of survey research to the understanding of memory

Reviews survey methodological research (1955-1993), including the survey interview, that has contributed to the understanding of certain memory phenomena including retention interval effects, retrieval effort effects, and others. These memory phenomena are discussed in terms of 3 broad categories of the cognitive activities of survey respondents: (1) remembering what events occurred, (2) remembering when events occurred, and (3) estimating and reconstructing. Laboratory research exploring some of these phenomena under controlled conditions is discussed, and challenges for future collaboration between cognitive psychologists and survey methodologists are presented.
