Community characteristics, individual and household attributes, and child survival in Brazil

The level of maternal education in Brazil is a significant determinant in the relationship between child mortality risks and various community characteristics. The quality of water supply remains an important indicator for child survival only for the children whose mothers are less educated. The observation implies that group specific policies would yield better results in child health care. Further, the quantity and quality of community facilities partly explain the regional variations in child mortality rates between the Northeast and South/Southeast regions.
