Examined the prevalence, sociodemographic correlates, comorbidity, impairment, and professional help seeking associated with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised (DSM-III-R) phobias (agoraphobia [AGP; with or without panic], social [SOC] and simple [SIM] phobia) assessed in the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS). The NCS involved 8,098 noninstitutionalized respondents (aged 15-54 yrs), and its diagnoses were based on a modified version of the World Health Organization's Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Results show lifetime (and 30-day) prevalence are 6.7% (2.3%) for AGP, 13.3% (4.5%) for SOC, and 11.3% (5.5%) for SIM. Lifetime prevalence estimates decline with age, suggesting a possible cohort effect. The majority of Ss with phobias reported at least 1 other lifetime DSM-III–R/NCS disorder. Perceived impairment is significantly less prevalent among Ss with AGP than Ss with SOC or SIM. A higher proportion of Ss with AGP sought professional help than Ss with SOC or SIM.
