Mass shootings? Blame enough for all

And then I talked with Bushman and Eric Dubow, a distinguished research professor in Bowling Green State University’s department of psychology and a research professor at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.¶¶The pair recently conducted a study on risk factors for youth violence and came to the same conclusion as so many other studies: there is no single root cause for violence, particularly when it comes to acts of mass killing.¶¶Yes, violence in the media does have an impact, as noted consistently in studies from decades ago, Dubow said, including a Surgeon General’s report that found high levels of exposure to TV violence was “a” cause of aggressive behavior, but not “the” cause.¶¶”To blame all of the mass shootings or all of the violence in society on one factor is foolish,” Dubow said. “Many factors lead to aggressive behavior, not just one. … When these combine and accumulate, over time we’re going to see aggressive and violent behavior.¶¶”But that’s separate from mass shootings.”
