And this interplay between physical space and company culture is crucial to a successful office, said Felix Kabo, an architect and scientist at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research in Ann Arbor who studies such matters.¶¶So when Ford recently unveiled its sweeping plans for a total remake of its Dearborn campus, Kabo called me to ask whether the automaker was overhauling not just the physical environment but also how Ford’s people work together.¶¶”Many organizations throw billions into building magnificent buildings,” Kabo said, “but they don’t hear this very simple idea: If you don’t understand how your social and spatial environments are interacting, more likely than not all that investment is for naught.”
