This proposal requests support to re-establish contact with the young adults who participated in the first seven years of the Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY) and to conduct two new cycles of data collection to study the impact of middle school, high school, and college mathematics and science courses on career development. The two new cycles will allow the identification of the factors primarily responsible for (1) the decision to enter a baccalaureate program in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, (2) the persistence to finish that program and graduate, (3) the decision to enter and pursue advanced education, and (4) the selection and persistence in a STEM-related career.
