This re-entry submission is a supplement to Principal Investigator Melissa Jonson-Reids Center for Innovation in Child Maltreatment Policy Research and Training (CICM) grant (5P50HD096719-03) at Washington University in St. Louis. This administrative supplement application is to fund Dr. Suzanne Perkins re-entry into a research career as an educational neuroscientist. Dr. Perkins will be contributing to the CICM administrative core grant under the second specific aim. To that end, Dr. Perkins’ role on the grant will be specifically focused on identifying complex neurodevelopmental models that underlie the etiology of academic and cognitive deficits in maltreated youth and studying translation to real-world academic interventions for these youth. This re-entry supplement will foster a multidisciplinary collaboration between social work (Dr. Jonson-Reid), cognitive neuroscience (Dr. Barch) and educational neuroscience (Dr. Perkins) that will bridge the connections between the co-occurence of physical and psychological maltreatment and the long-term negative sequelae within the domain of educational functioning and attainment. This fits squarely within the Pediatric Trauma and Critical Illness Branch (PTCIB) priority of understanding the pathophysiology of pediatric trauma with the goal of preventing and intervening in educational functioning and attainment deficits.
