Sub-national data are essential to understanding how societies develop, collapse, prosper and change. As geo-coded data proliferates, three impediments to progress exist and are likely to worsen: (1) mismatches in scale and units of analysis (between available data and theoretical quantities of interest, and between multiple datasets one would like to merge(, (2) multiple data sources for the same variables (with measurements that may be conflicting, overlapping or complementary), and (3) the difficulty of evaluating the stability of results under alternative measurement strategies, or when using data from other sources or cases. Yet to be developed is a unified platform that combines low technical barriers to entry with broad substantive scope, allowing users to do the following easily: (1) integrate spatially-misaligned data, (2) account for differences in measurement across primary sources, and (3) assess the generalizability and robustness of their results. Any such platform should be beneficial to researchers dealing with all stages in the life cycle of geocoded data, from initial pre-processing and geocoding, to data synthesis, statistical modeling and archiving. We seek funding to support a new Sub-National Data Archive System for Social and Behavioral Data (SUDARS). SUDARS will relieve bottlenecks in research by integrating multiple sources of sub-national data in a common data repository at multiple, customizable spatio-temporal scales, and developing a suite of methods for data processing and analysis
