Linking MET Teachers and Students in District-wide Data

Among the datasets available to the research community in the Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) Longitudinal Database at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) are scores on state tests for five years of MET data collection. , which can used to measure student achievement and teacher value-added scores. School districts provided test scores for all students in the district for the 2009-11 through 2013-14 school years. In principle, these data could be used for studies that follow teachers and students over time to measure the lasting effects of teaching and year-to-year variability in teacher value-added. Because the data contain information for all students and teachers, not just those involved in the MET study, they could also be used to compare the lasting effect of MET teachers to other teachers in the district. However, delays in receiving the data from the school district prevented RAND from providing ICPSR with links that consistently identify students or teachers across years. As a result, many of the interesting research questions for which the data were collected cannot be answered.
