There are three principal tasks that will be conducted under this phase of the interagency agreement. First, a summer workshop will be conducted in June of 2011. This workshop will focus on increasing the utilization of the data in two ongoing OJJDP data collection series, the Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) and the Juvenile Residential Facility Census (JRFC). During this past year, NACJD has created concatenated files merging multiple years of the CJRP and JRFC data, which were also aggregated to facility-level and/or state-level files. In addition to these datasets, the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) for 2003 may also be featured in this workshop. This workshop will follow the format that was used in the OJJDP/NACJD workshop that was conducted in June 2009. There will be up to 21 individuals who will participate in this workshop and stipends will be provided to support their travel and subsistence while attending the workshop in Ann Arbor. Participants will be selected though an application process administered by NACJD and ICPSR and with admission determined by the workshop team including OJJDP, workshop instructors, and NACJD.
The second principal task will be the preparation for archiving of the data from OJJDP’s Program of Research on the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency. During the past year an initial visit was made to one project site to discuss the issues involved in developing archival data sets from this initiative. During the coming year sites visits will be made to the other two sites and additional meetings will be held regarding determining the specific data to be archived and implementing a process for submitting these data to the archive. In addition, resources devoted to data archiving will be used to begin preparation of the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency data once they are submitted to NACJD.
The third task involves processing of juvenile justice data that are in the processing queue of data sets that have been submitted to the archive. We anticipate that this will begin with the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement 2003 which we expect to be deposited in the near future. In addition there are five additional data sets that have been deposited or are expected to be deposited soon. These data sets are the Federal Prosecution of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Cases (Urban Institute), Outcome Evaluation of Parents Anonymous (NCCD), DFS Field Evaluation: Reforming Child Welfare in Indiana, 2007-2009 (Indiana University), In Search of Evidence-based Practice in Juvenile Corrections: An Evaluation of Florida?s Avon Park Youth Academy and STREET Smart Program (NCCD), and National Evaluation of Enforcement Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) program (Wake Forest, finalized submission anticipated in near future). We will work closely with OJJDP in determining the processing order of these submissions.
In addition to the above activities, this project will support periodic meetings with OJJDP representatives and working with data users to answer questions and resolve problems regarding the access to and utilization of the OJJDP datasets.
