This subaward will cover the 2025 Empirical Implications of Theoretical Models (EITM) summer institute and associated activities. The two-week EITM summer institute, hosted at the University of Michigan from August 4-15, will offer approximately two dozen early career scholars (typically Ph.D. students) an opportunity to work with senior scholars who are leaders in advancing theoretical modeling, empirical analysis, and their interconnections. The summer institute consists of lectures; mentoring opportunities and research feedback in whole-group, small-group, and one-on-one settings; and small-group work sessions to apply conceptual material to concrete problems. Lectures focus on scientific frameworks, examples from scientific literature, and specific methods for solidifying the theoretical basis for empirical claims, and analyzing the empirical basis for theoretical claims. They are delivered by discipline-leading scholars in these areas, including the co-PIs. This subaward will also cover an evaluation of the summer institute and a business meeting at the 2025 annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, which takes place in September.
