This project will inaugurate the Economic Measurement Research Institute (EMRI) at the National Bureau of Economic Research. The EMRI will have two main activities: (1) To promote innovation in economics statistics through research, collaboration, conferences, networking, training, and dissemination, and (2) To support specific research projects on economic measurement. The University of Michigan will contribute to both these activities. First, Matthew Shapiro (Michigan PI and co-PI of the NSF grant) will be co-director of the EMRI. In this role, he will co-lead the scientific mission of EMRI including selecting and advising research projects, assuring collaboration among the projects to advance the overall aims of EMRI, seeking support and collaboration with EMRI from academics, businesses, and government agencies, guiding dissemination of findings, and advancing incorporation of the findings to provide fundamental innovations in the production of official statistics. Second, EMRI will provide funding to support research of the ongoing RESET (Re-Engineering Statistics using Economic Transactions) projecta joint project of the University of Michigan, the University of Maryland, and the Census Bureauthat is supported by grants from the Sloan Foundation. Under this activity, the RESET team will conduct research using the RESET infrastructure for economic analysis and for refining estimates particularly concerning local areas. This activity will include research and analysis using the tools of economics and computer science, writing scholarly articles and white papers, and dissemination of the findings.
