Collecting, Archiving, and Publicly Sharing Data for RWJF’s Health and Medical Care Archive, 2013-2015

The Health and Medical Care Archive (HMCA) preserves and disseminates data collected by selected research projects funded by the Foundation. Its data preparation and archiving services insure the long-term preservation of these data and facilitate secondary analyses by the scholarly community. This renewal proposal seeks to continue these services to guarantee that current and future data resources are available to researchers. Activities proposed during the next three years: a) preserve, process, and disseminate approximately 24-30 Foundation-sponsored data collections; b) expand a bibliography of data-related literature to provide the research community with a comprehensive picture of how Foundation-supported data collections have influenced the professional literature; c) update selected older HMCA collections to increase the number of available data formats; d) provide a data enclave service for any HMCA data collections that might have significant confidentiality concerns; e) offer a full range of training and outreach opportunities which will include two summer workshops, exhibits at each annual meeting of the American Public Health Association, and presentations at various RWJF-sponsored fellowship and grantee programs; f) review and revise content for the HMCA Web site; and g) explore greater coordination and integration between HMCA and other projects with health-related data. Our strategy focuses on the results of making these datasets available: encouraging scientific inquiry, promoting new types of research, and avoiding the duplication of data collection efforts. The services provided by HMCA support all of the Foundation?s program areas by providing resources for evidence-based research and policymaking. The only challenge to the success of this project will be if HMCA does not receive a sufficient number of RWJF-sponsored data collections to process. We intend to work closely with the Foundation to make certain this does not occur.
