The importance of research data to science and to society is currently being emphasized around the world. Across the life cycle of a dataset, multiple handoffs between people and organizations occur and numerous individuals play important roles, adding value to the dataset as it comes into being and is published, reused, curated, and preserved. People performing these data-related tasks deserve recognition and attribution. Integrating such attribution into the metadata for a dataset ensures that an accurate record of contributors to a dataset can be maintained and citations generated as needed over the data life cycle. This is a collaborative proposal with the University of Kansas to host a workshop on the topic of integrating robust, comprehensive data citation information into a structured metadata standard for the social sciences called the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI). ICPSR will work to prepare for and conduct the meeting, which will be held in conjunction with a code sprint focused on enhancing the DDI model. ICPSR will also create controlled vocabularies (for example, options for the “role” attribute) needed for complete data citation across the data life cycle.
