The overarching aim of RESET is to create the methodological and institutional architecture for switching official statistics to the proposed new approach. This project has two major components: (1) Designing and implementing the RESET Demonstration Project using infrastructure with Circana, and (2) Continuing RESET methodological research and dissemination of research across multiple platforms. The project will Create, implement, and disseminate indicators of inflation, nominal expenditure, and real expenditure under the Demonstration Project described in the proposal. Compare such indicators with official statistics in order to evaluate their performance and incremental information, and to design approaches that could be used to bridge the existing architecture with the new one. Refine and evaluate alternative approaches for measuring quality change at scale, thereby creating the scientific case for adopting these techniques for official statistics. Broaden the collaboration with the statistical agencies to include the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Bureau of Economic Analysis, who are key participants in creating the relevant official statistics. Collaborate with multiple firms to both refine methods and establish protocols for blending statistics across firms to produce economic indicators. Advance the use of commercial data to create economic indicators and produce economic research. Publish research papers and technical documents disseminating the findings of the project. The University of Michigan will work collaboratively with the University of Maryland in all aspects of the project.
