This is a request for a supplement to a STEP Type 2 research award (DUE-1118626) which supports the work of the Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY). The LSAY was funded by the NSF in 1985 and has been funded through various NSF programs over the last 25 years (MDR ?8550085, REC96-27669, RED-9909569, REC-0337487, DUE-0525357, DUE-0712842, DUE-0856695, DRL-0917535, DUE-1118625, DUE-1118626, and DUE-1118628). Beginning with a national sample of public school students in grades 7 and 10 in the fall of 1987, the LSAY has followed these students through secondary and post-secondary schooling and into young adulthood, allowing an examination of the sources and impact of college career and course decisions on entry into careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). The current award was made to Michigan State University in August, 2009, (with the award number DUE-0856695) and was transferred to the University of Michigan in the fall of 2010 (with a new award number of DUE-1118626).

The recent decision of the STEP program to decline a new STEP proposal has threatened the future of the study. At the present time, we are engaged in discussions with NSF staff and other agencies and foundations about future funding, but regardless of the outcome of these discussions, it is necessary to complete the current cycle of data collection and to do appropriate archiving and related functions to protect the NSF?s $16 million investment in the LSAY. It is necessary to complete:

(1) the 2011 cycle of data collection, including editing, coding, and integrating this year?s data into the 25-year longitudinal record,

(2) two additional The Generation X Reports to sustain the interest and involvement of current participants, and

(2) the documentation for the submission of the remaining LSAY data to the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

To complete these tasks, an additional $229,996 is needed.
